Overview

Classified between a tooth-colored filling and a dental crown, an inlay or onlay can save a decayed or damaged tooth. Used on pre-molars and molars, a dental inlay covers the concave center of a tooth while an onlay covers the tooth's rounded, upper edges. Like fillings and crowns, inlays and onlays can be made with different materials — composite resin, metal, and porcelain. At experienced dentist Dr. Sangiv I. Patel's office, both inlays and onlays are crafted utilizing the CEREC 3D Restorative System and are made of high-quality materials. Dr. Patel can help Melbourne, FL patients better understand crowns, fillings, inlays, and onlays so they can make the best choice about how to treat their tooth at Sangiv I. Patel, D.D.S., PA. At Dr. Patel's private practice, the tooth-colored fillings are completed with composite resin while dental crowns, inlays, and onlays are crafted with the CEREC.

Best Candidates

An inlay or onlay is a good choice for those who have a cracked tooth or a large cavity that is too big to be filled but doesn't require the complete coverage of a dental crown. During your exam, Dr. Patel will use your digital x-rays to select the best method for your tooth. If an inlay or onlay is selected, he will discuss the available materials that will best fit your requirements. At Dr. Patel's private practice, both inlays and onlays are completed on the day that you arrive in a single visit. Thanks to our CEREC 3D Restorative System, your inlay or onlay will be custom crafted while you wait at our facility.

What To Expect

After applying a local anesthesia to the treatment area, Dr. Patel will start by removing areas of decay. Stronger methods of sedation can also be used upon request. Once the tooth is cleaned, impressions will be made of the tooth. Once your inlay or onlay is ready that same day, Dr. Patel will carefully place and bond it onto your tooth. He may polish the edges or adjust the fit so your tooth is properly covered and feels comfortable.

Recovery

If only local anesthesia was used, you will be able to leave after the procedure and return to your normal daily routine. You may feel some discomfort, inflammation, or sensitivity for a couple of days after your inlay or onlay is placed. Please contact our office if you have any concerns after your procedure. Your inlay or onlay can be cared for, like your natural teeth, with daily brushing and flossing. You should continue to schedule your annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings at private practice Sangiv I. Patel, D.D.S., PA so he can assess the health and wear of your inlay or onlay. With appropriate care, it should last for many years before replacing or repairing is necessary.

Insurance Coverage

Inlays and onlays are a common treatment for dental decay and other issues so they're usually covered by dental insurance. A team member will contact your insurance provider to determine your specific coverage before calculating your out-of-pocket costs. Dr. Patel can customize your treatment with different materials to go with your budget. During your consultation, he will go over cost estimates and payment types we accept, including medical financing.
